About Grey Area Therapy

Our
Story
Grey Area Therapy is a group private practice in Chicago providing mental health counseling to adolescents and adults. Our clinicians all come from various different backgrounds and have various clinical interests. We have therapists with a wide range of experience and we see individuals wanting to address anxiety, depression, relationship issues (romantic, peer, and family), trauma, eating disorders, grief, chronic illness, OCD, work-life balance, self-esteem and body image, major life transitions, and setting healthy boundaries. We also provide support to couples looking to better understand their relationships and improve communication and understanding.
How we became Grey Area Therapy: Grey Area Therapy got its name based on the common cognitive distortion of black or white thinking. When we look at cognitive distortions (exaggerated thought patterns that aren't usually based on facts), black and white thinking tends to be the most common distortion. Black and white thinking simply means thinking in absolutes- such as all or nothing. It can be difficult for us to accept things that may appear "grey" because we want certainty. So we adapt these ways of thinking that tend to exacerbate our anxiety and depression, often leading to conflict within ourselves and our relationships.

At Grey Area Therapy, we will explore both the function and the need for these absolute statements, and how they usually end up hurting us. When appropriate, we will work on how to become more accepting of uncertainty. Learn more about our team.
